Pop Art had emerged in the late 1950s in the United States.  Other leading artists like Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, and Jasper Johns thrived during this art movement along with Lichtenstein.  What set aside this particular movement from the other traditional art eras was challenging the traditions of fine art through the use of popular and mass culture imagery.  Pop Art was mostly seen as the ironic movement for the pieces created during the time chose topics and emphasized "...the banal or kitschy elements of any culture..." through the use of irony.  In some of the movement's more popular pieces, the artist would take an item and place it in a context not considered normal for the piece.

Lichtenstein was an American pop artist born in Manhattan, New York.  Using the idea of irony to create his art, Lichtenstein had defined the remise of his Pop Art through parody.  Lichtenstein is most known and remembered for his "comic book style" inspired paintings.  While these paintings documented "scene specific" comic-like windows, the also parodied more often in a "tongue-in-cheek" sort of manner.   Lichtenstein had described Pop Art as "..not American painting but actually industrial painting."
